Background of the Study
Cybersecurity threats in higher education institutions have grown significantly, with universities being prime targets due to their large volumes of sensitive data and open network access (Suleiman et al., 2023). Kaduna State University (KASU), located in Kaduna State, faces similar cybersecurity challenges as it continues to expand its digital services, including online learning platforms, student records, and administrative systems. These systems are at risk of attacks such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and denial-of-service attacks (Isah & Abdulrahman, 2024).
An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is essential for detecting and responding to potential security breaches in a timely manner. IDS solutions monitor network traffic for suspicious activities or anomalies that may indicate unauthorized access or cyberattacks (Zubairu & Ali, 2023). For universities, implementing an IDS helps safeguard sensitive data, prevent system downtime, and ensure the integrity of academic and administrative resources. This study aims to develop an IDS tailored to the specific needs of Kaduna State University’s network infrastructure, enhancing its security posture and ensuring data protection.
Statement of the Problem
Kaduna State University lacks a comprehensive intrusion detection system to monitor and protect its network from cyber threats. The absence of an effective IDS leaves the university vulnerable to potential attacks that could compromise sensitive data, disrupt academic activities, and damage its reputation. Given the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks, there is an urgent need for a system that can detect and alert administrators about security incidents in real time.
Objectives of the Study
To develop an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that can monitor and detect security threats in the network of Kaduna State University.
To assess the performance of the IDS in identifying potential network intrusions and minimizing false positives.
To propose recommendations for improving the cybersecurity infrastructure of Kaduna State University based on the findings from the IDS implementation.
Research Questions
How can an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) be developed to detect network intrusions at Kaduna State University?
How effective is the IDS in identifying potential cyber threats and minimizing false alarms?
What are the potential challenges in implementing and maintaining an IDS at Kaduna State University?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design, development, and implementation of an IDS for the main campus of Kaduna State University, Kaduna State. The IDS will be evaluated based on its ability to detect network intrusions and its integration with existing network infrastructure. Limitations may include the availability of necessary resources, compatibility with the university’s current network setup, and the time required to evaluate the system’s performance.
Definitions of Terms
Intrusion Detection System (IDS): A security system that monitors network traffic to detect and alert administrators about potential malicious activities or unauthorized access attempts.
Network Security: The practice of protecting a network from unauthorized access, misuse, and threats such as cyberattacks.
False Positive: An alert raised by an IDS indicating a threat that does not actually exist.
Cyber Threats: Potential risks to an organization's network or data, including hacking, malware, and phishing attacks.
